Local 30- Recap
It’s been a few days since we completed our 30 days of local eating! All food/ingredients within ~200 miles of Minneapolis (minus our ten exceptions). I’ll be honest, the last 4 days were tough. Is that how a food challenge usually is at the end? We held on, though, because part of the experience was to feel what it might be like to truly not have access to certain foods. If this were a “real life” scenario, we might go MONTHS without access to certain foods. If this were a “real life” scenario, we would possibly never have access to some ingredients (coconut oil, I’m looking at you!). I know…

Local 30 Part 3: Tricky Ingredients & What We’re Missing
Doing a local eating challenge leads you to research and discover specific food related facts that you might not have otherwise. Here I wanted to document a few specific instances where we’ve had to dig a bit deeper as well as share a list of specific ingredients we’re missing! The Dairy Saga I called this the dairy saga, but really it’s a butter saga because that is the most important dairy product. Am I right, or am I right?! 😉 Upon further inspection, we learned that the creamery in Kalona, Iowa (where most of the dairy has been coming from) is a bit further than 200 miles away. Within 250…

Local 30 Part Two: What Are We Eating?
In this post I wanted to list the specific farms that are feeding us as well as some of the specific meals we’re enjoying. Yes, we miss certain foods and ingredients (ahem- chocolate, paprika, and nuts!), but we are truly enjoying some fantastic meals! Ingredients: Animal Products: Venison- Webb Lake, WI Backyard Eggs (Our backyard, duh!) Other eggs: Sunshine Harvest Farm (Webster, MN) purchased at the Mill City Farmers Market (Minneapolis) Larry Shultz Organic Farm (Owatonna, MN) Chicken: Kadejan (Glenwood, MN) Beef: Molly at Forage Girls! (Hertel, WI) Ground Pork: Pastures a Plenty (Clara City, MN). However, we will soon have half of a pasture raised, organically fed pig from…

Local 30- Fall 2020 Part 1
Well, we finally dove into a Local 30! In fact, we are one week in as of today. I tend to be someone who ponders (ahem- overanalyzes) things for a very long time before pulling the trigger. This is something I’ve wanted to do for quite a few years. I don’t know what got into me, but I finally said, “Let’s do it,” and Loren, being the easy going person that he is, was totally on board. What does this mean? In this challenge, we have committed to eating locally for 30 days. “Local” is being defined as anything that is grown within 200 miles of Minneapolis, MN. As you…

Hello!
Welcome to our little corner of the vast interwebs. We created this site for documenting all things Feasting Local. What does that mean? To us, “feasting local” means quite a bit. One of the synonyms of “feasting” is “consume.” We consume things 24/7- food, TV, information, resources, etc. Here, “feasting local” means consuming all that is local and thriving while doing so. More specifically, feasting local might include sourcing food and ingredients that are grown or produced as close to home as possible. It means sharing time with those close to you. This may even mean learning your neighbors names or meeting someone new in your community. To us, feasting…
